Susanne studied Biology at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. She completed her Master thesis at the Rockefeller University in New York in the group of Günter Blobel. In 2013, she received her Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, where she conducted her thesis research in the group of Eva Nogales. She then moved to Switzerland and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel. Susanne joined the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Zurich in 2021 as a senior scientist, and became an SNSF Assistant Professor in 2022.

Steffen, originally from Berlin, received his degree in Biochemistry from the University of Zurich. He conducted his Master’s thesis in single-molecule spectroscopy at the laboratory of Prof. Ben Schuler, exploring RNA structure using optical tweezers. His current research focuses on the biogenesis of cytosolic iron-sulfur cluster proteins.

Keshav earned his Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in Microbiology from the University of Delhi, India. He then moved to Munich, Germany, for his Master’s in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Ludwig-Maximilians-University. During his studies, Keshav employed deep learning-based techniques for the segmentation of 3D EM reconstructions, particularly in the context of Focused Ion Beam-Scanning Electron Microscopy. His current project focuses on structural and mechanistic studies of Fe-S helicases.

Roberta received her Master’s degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Bioinformatics from the University of Zurich. She conducted her Master thesis research in the group of Prof. Steven Brown (University of Zurich, Chronobiology and Sleep Research), where she characterized the cell autonomous metabolic phenotype that arises upon loss of the multifunctional RNA binding protein NONO. She first joined our group as a research intern and then as a PhD student.

Her project focuses on structural and mechanistic studies of RecQ helicases.

Laboratory Technician

Alexander received his BSc degree in Biochemistry from the University of Edinburgh and has worked for many years as a technician in the fields of biochemistry and microbiology. At the Biological NMR Centre at the University of Leicester, he worked on recombinant protein expression and purification, while also supporting the teaching activities of the biochemistry department. He then moved to Zürich and joined the group of Prof. Leo Eberl in the Department of Microbiology as a lab manager.

In his current position, he supports various research projects within the group and manages the lab infrastructure.

Iryna studied Biology at Donetsk National University in her homeland Ukraine. After moving to Switzerland, she gained experience as a medical assistant in a medical practice in Zürich and worked as a Quality Control Specialist at a bioanalytical company. Since 2019, Iryna has been serving as an administrative assistant at the University of Zürich, and has supported our group since 2023.
